World Food Day research
I researched some of North America's most serious food-related problems.
One of the most serious problems there is food loss and waste.
The United Nations is helping this problem by raising awareness of food loss and making them rethink the way food is produced, handled, and consumed. They held a conference and shared actions and solutions to prevent and reduce food loss and waste.
Not only the UN but also other organizations and companies in the United States are trying to take a step forward towards this problem. Those who joined the Food Waste Challenge are encouraged to become U.S. Food Loss and Waste 2023 Champions. The United States Environmental Protection Agency offers help by giving them technical assistance for measuring food waste and assessing the environmental benefits of food waste reduction.
One of the interesting movements related to World Food Day that I found, is the University of Miami community holding a World Food Day fair on October 18, 2023. There, community members could taste an organic iced tea using herbs grown at the University’s Sustainability Gardens. In addition to enjoying their iced tea, they could also deepen their understanding of urban farming, community gardens, composting, and more.
The government is taking action too. United States Agency for International Development, known as USAID, is sharing geographic data from NASA with farmers so they can make better decisions in agriculture, especially in fragile areas. They are also helping farmers to use fertilizers efficiently, in order to protect the environment.
